Local Services Ads vs Google Ads for HVAC contractors

What Local Services Ads cost an HVAC shop per lead in 2026, how they differ from regular Google Ads, what changed with the Google Verified badge, and which one a small contractor should fund first.

Google offers a small HVAC contractor two very different doors into its search results, and picking the wrong one first is the most expensive advertising mistake in this trade. Local Services Ads bill per lead and sit above everything else on the page. Regular Google Ads bill per click and need managing. They feed different kinds of jobs, they cost different amounts, and since late 2025 one of them changed more than most owners realize.

This guide covers how each one bills, what an HVAC lead actually costs in 2026, what changed recently, and a short decision list for a shop that can only fund one.

How Local Services Ads work

  • You pay per lead, not per click. A "lead" is a customer who calls, messages or books from the ad. Google sets the per-lead price for your trade and market; you only control a weekly budget cap.
  • The ads appear at the very top of Google Search and Maps, above the regular search ads, with a verification badge next to your name.
  • To run them at all, Google has to verify your license, insurance and background checks. Since November 2024 a linked, verified Google Business Profile is also mandatory — a suspended or incomplete profile stops your Local Services Ads.
  • Any call that lasts more than 30 seconds is automatically billed as a lead, whether or not it turns into a job.
  • In most markets, leads are shared: the same caller is offered to several nearby contractors at once, and the fastest credible responder tends to win the job.

One recent change matters. On October 20, 2025 Google retired the "Google Guaranteed" and "Google Screened" badges and replaced them with a single blue "Google Verified" checkmark, and on November 7, 2025 the old $2,000 money-back guarantee ended. The badge now means you were verified, nothing more. Do not let anyone sell you on the guarantee; it no longer exists.

What an HVAC lead costs

Benchmarks vary by source, but they land in the same range:

  • Searchlight's February 2026 dataset puts HVAC Local Services Ads at about $51 per lead, with a 44% booking rate and roughly $2,100 per closed job.
  • Agencies serving the trade quote $85 to $110 per HVAC lead.
  • Across trades, per-lead prices trended up through 2025, and the full spread runs from about $10 to well over $200.

For planning, budget $50 to $110 per lead and assume roughly half of them book. That puts the math for a small shop at something like $1,000 to $3,000 a month for a handful of booked jobs — and it makes the phone the whole game. A missed call is a paid lead with a competitor on the other line.

How it differs from regular Google Ads

  • Billing: per lead with a price Google sets, versus per click with a price you bid.
  • Placement: above the search ads, versus competing in the ad auction below them.
  • Requirements: license, insurance, background check and a verified Google Business Profile, versus no screening at all.
  • Control: Local Services Ads have no keyword targeting and one fixed format. Google Ads gives you keywords, negative keywords, geographic limits and every ad format — the price is that someone has to manage it.
  • Disputes: this got harder in 2024-2025. Manual lead disputes were replaced with automated credits, and Google no longer credits leads that are outside your service area or job types at all. You can still flag a bad lead with "Rate this lead", but you have 30 days and no appeal.
  • Job mix: the lower cost per lead comes with a smaller ticket. LSA leads skew to service and repair calls; Google Ads skews to replacements and installations, which carry meaningfully bigger tickets.

There is one more change coming. Google is migrating Local Services Ads into Google Ads as pay-per-lead campaigns inside Performance Max, rolling out through late 2026: weekly budgets become daily, manual bidding goes away, and historical reports do not carry over. If you run LSAs today, keep your own lead and spend records; the platform will not hand you a clean history.

Which one should a small HVAC shop fund first?

Pick Local Services Ads first if you are licensed and insured, your Google Business Profile is verified with a healthy review count, you want phone calls rather than website traffic, and someone can actually answer the phone.

Pick regular Google Ads first if your money is in replacements and installations, you need tight keyword and geography control, or LSA lead prices in your market have spiked past $110.

Run both if the budget allows — LSA for the top-of-page emergency and repair calls, Google Ads for branded and replacement keywords. But if you can only fund one, start with LSA: the cost per lead runs roughly half of non-branded Google Ads, and it is far less work to operate well.

Skip Local Services Ads entirely if you cannot pass verification, your profile is weak or suspended, your review count is thin, or most of your revenue is installs that a service-call skew will not feed.

Before you spend a dollar on either

The ads rent attention; the profile and the reviews convert it. Both ad products rank you partly on the strength of your Google Business Profile — completeness, review count and rating, and whether you respond to reviews. A shop that fixes the free foundation first buys the same leads cheaper. Start with the categories on your profile — our guide to Google Business Profile categories for HVAC contractors covers that in detail — then work the review side with how to get more HVAC reviews, and set the whole budget with the planning rules in how much HVAC marketing costs.
